How often should you clean a shower?
We recommend cleaning your shower at least once a week. This will help remove dirt, soap scum and bacteria that can accumulate over time. If you use the shower more frequently, we suggest cleaning it every two or three days.
How to clean a shower: The process
Declutter and organize
Remove any items that don’t belong in the shower, such as shampoo bottles, soap dishes, razors and sponges. This will make it easier to clean the shower without having to move items that are in your way.
Gather your tools
- Rubber gloves
- Bucket
- Scrub brush
- Towels
- Glass cleaner
- Vinegar
- Baking soda
- Disinfectant
Make your own cleaning solution
- Glass cleaner: mix 1 part vinegar with 3 parts water
- Disinfectant: mix 2 tablespoons of baking soda with 1 litre of hot water
- Soap scum remover: mix ¼ cup of white vinegar with ¾ cup of ammonia
- Shower mould removal: spray the mould with a 50/50 mixture of hydrogen peroxide and white vinegar, then rinse off with hot water
Run hot water
Run hot water in your shower for 5 minutes. The hot steam will loosen any grime and dirt that’s on the shower surface so you’ll have an easier time cleaning it.
Descale the shower head
Mix equal parts of vinegar and water in a bowl. Fill a plastic bag with the solution and tie it around the shower head for one hour. This will help descale the showerhead and remove any dirt or soap scum that has built up over time.
Remove the bag and scrub the showerhead with a scrub brush to remove any dirt and grime. Rinse off with warm water.
Clean shower faucets
Spray the faucets with your glass cleaner and scrub them with a towel or sponge. Rinse off with warm water.
Unclog the drain
Manually remove any hair or dirt residue. Pour hot water into the drain followed by a draino product. Wait a few minutes to let the draino work and follow with a pot of hot water again. Alternatively, you can use vinegar and water solution or baking soda.

Clean the shower wall
Spray the shower walls with your cleaning solution. Using a scrub brush, start from the top of the wall and work your way down. Rinse off with warm water.
